CISSP vs CCSP: broad security leadership or cloud depth?

The CISSP® covers security across eight domains; the CCSP, also from ISC2, goes deep on cloud security across six. Most people take the CISSP first, because an active CISSP covers the CCSP's entire experience requirement, then add the CCSP if their work is in cloud.

What each one covers

CISSP

The CISSP is the broad credential: governance and risk, asset protection, architecture and cryptography, networks, identity, testing, operations and software. Cloud appears throughout, but as one context among many. See the domains overview.

CCSP

The CCSP's six domains and their weights in the current outline:

CCSP domainWeight
Cloud Concepts, Architecture and Design17%
Cloud Data Security20%
Cloud Platform and Infrastructure Security17%
Cloud Application Security16%
Cloud Security Operations17%
Legal, Risk and Compliance13%

Expect depth on cloud architecture and shared responsibility, protecting data in the cloud, platform and infrastructure security, cloud applications, day-to-day cloud operations, and the legal and compliance questions that follow data across borders. It is vendor-neutral: it does not teach one provider's console.

The experience shortcut that decides the order

ISC2 states that an active CISSP can be substituted for the entire CCSP experience requirement. That one rule shapes most people's plans:

  • CISSP first. Once you hold an active CISSP, it covers the CCSP experience requirement, so after passing the CCSP exam you do not need to show separate years in the CCSP domains.
  • CCSP first. You need five years in IT, three of them in cybersecurity and one in a CCSP domain. If you are short, you become an Associate of ISC2 for the CCSP, just as with the CISSP.

The link also runs the other way: the CCSP is on ISC2's approved list for the CISSP experience waiver, so holding it can cover 1 year of CISSP experience. See experience requirements.

Who each one suits

Take the CISSP first if

  • You want a management or leadership role, where breadth and the manager's lens matter.
  • Your work spans on-premises and cloud, or you are not yet sure where you will specialise.
  • You want the most widely recognised security credential on your CV before you specialise.

Take the CCSP first, or only, if

  • You are a cloud security engineer or architect and cloud is where you will stay.
  • Your employer is a cloud-first company or a cloud consultancy whose clients ask for it.
  • You already hold the CISSP and want to show cloud depth. This is the most common case.

The India angle

Indian cloud and security teams in global capability centres, SaaS companies and cloud consultancies in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune often ask for cloud security skills alongside broad credentials; check the job descriptions you are aiming at. For a security architect in one of those teams, CISSP plus CCSP is a strong pair: the first for leadership, the second for depth. For someone early in a cloud career, a provider's own security certification and hands-on work often come before either.

How the exams compare

Both exams use ISC2's computerized adaptive testing. Both currently have the same item range, the same three-hour limit and the same scaled passing mark. The difference is content: CCSP questions assume you know how cloud services are built and shared, and test design decisions in that world. The CISSP asks you to make decisions across the whole organisation. Our CAT explainer applies to both formats.

Both exams also reward the same habit: read the scenario, find the real problem, and choose the answer a responsible security leader would choose. Our think like a manager guide is useful for either.

A worked example: a cloud architect in Hyderabad

Karthik has seven years of experience: three as a systems engineer and four as a cloud security engineer at a global capability centre. He designs landing zones, reviews identity and network designs for application teams, and works with the risk team on cloud audits. He wants to move into a principal security architect role.

  • Option one: CISSP, then CCSP. He easily meets the CISSP experience rule. Once he holds an active CISSP, it covers the CCSP experience requirement, and the CCSP adds proof of cloud depth. Total: two exams over perhaps a year.
  • Option two: CCSP only. He also meets the CCSP experience rule directly. This is faster, but leaves him without the broad credential that architect and leadership job descriptions often name.

For Karthik, option one fits the role he wants. If he wanted to stay a hands-on cloud engineer, the CCSP alone, alongside his provider certifications, would be enough.

Studying for each

  • For the CISSP, cloud engineers usually find Security Architecture and Engineering, Communication and Network Security and Identity and Access Management (IAM) familiar, and spend more time on governance, law, business continuity and the manager's way of choosing answers. See how to pass the CISSP.
  • For the CCSP, people coming from the CISSP usually need more depth on how cloud services are built and shared, and on the legal and compliance questions specific to cloud. Hands-on time in at least one cloud platform makes the scenarios much easier to read.

Common misconceptions

  • "The CCSP is the CISSP for cloud." It overlaps, but it is a specialist credential with its own domains, not a cloud version of the same exam.
  • "I need the CCSP to work in cloud security." Many cloud security roles hire on hands-on skill and provider certifications. The CCSP helps most where vendor-neutral design and governance matter.
  • "Holding both doubles the fees." The exams are separate, but ISC2 charges members one annual maintenance fee in total.

Cost and upkeep

CostCISSPCCSP
Exam (Americas and Asia-Pacific)$749US$599
Exam (Europe)€719.04€575.04
Exam (UK)£606.69£485.19
Annual maintenance fee$135, which also covers the CCSP if you hold both

Holding both does not double the yearly fee: ISC2 charges members one maintenance fee however many of its credentials they hold. Check ISC2's maintenance policy for how CPEs apply when you hold two credentials. For CISSP costs in detail, see what the CISSP costs.

Experience rules in more detail

CISSPCCSP

Security shareAll of it, in at least 2 domains3 years in cybersecurity
Domain shareAt least 2 of 8 CISSP domainsAt least 1 year in one or more CCSP domains

The CCSP's rule is looser on what counts as IT but stricter on cloud: at least one year has to be in its domains. If you have spent your career on-premises, the CISSP is the easier first step.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Will cloud be the centre of my work for the next five years, or one part of it?
  2. Do the job descriptions I want name the CISSP, the CCSP or both?
  3. Do I already hold, or will I soon hold, an active CISSP that would cover the CCSP experience?
  4. How much hands-on cloud work have I done, as opposed to reading about it?

Our view

If you are choosing one, choose the one that matches the next job you want. If you want both, take the CISSP first: it is broader, it is more widely requested, and it removes the CCSP's experience hurdle.

Next steps

Questions people ask

Should I take CISSP or CCSP first?

Usually the CISSP. An active CISSP covers the CCSP's entire experience requirement, and the CISSP is broader and more widely requested.

Does CISSP waive CCSP experience?

Yes. ISC2 states that an active CISSP can be substituted for the entire CCSP experience requirement.

Is the CCSP harder than the CISSP?

The CCSP is narrower but deeper. Candidates with strong cloud experience often find it easier; those without hands-on cloud work find it harder.

How much does the CCSP exam cost?

US$599 in the Americas and Asia-Pacific, €575.04 in Europe and £485.19 in the UK, plus local taxes, per ISC2's pricing page on 28 October 2026.
