How to compare certifications

Certifications answer different questions about you. Before comparing names, decide what you want the credential to say.

If you want to show…Look at
Broad security knowledge with a leadership viewCISSP
Security management and governanceCISM (ISACA)
Audit and assurance of information systemsCISA (ISACA)
Cloud security architecture and operationsCCSP (ISC2)
A first, foundational security credentialSecurity+ (CompTIA)

These are not ranks on one ladder. Many professionals hold two of them, for example the CISSP with CISM or CISA, because they cover different ground.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Where is your career going? Towards architecture and leadership, governance, audit, cloud, or a first security role?
  • Do you meet the experience requirement? The CISSP needs 5 years of paid work in at least 2 of its domains, with a path to become an Associate of ISC2 if you pass before you have it. See experience requirements.
  • What do employers in your market ask for? Read twenty job descriptions for the role you want and count which credentials appear.
  • What will the exam cost you in time? The CISSP's breadth usually means a few months of study around a job. The study plan guide helps you size it.

The CISSP in one paragraph

The CISSP is issued by ISC2. The exam is a computerized adaptive test of 100–150 items in 3 hours across 8 domains, with a passing standard of 700 out of 1,000. To be certified you need 5 years of relevant paid work, an endorsement within 9 months of passing, and then 120 continuing professional education credits every 3 years plus an annual maintenance fee of $135. The exam overview and the maintenance page cover the details with their sources.

Comparing ways to prepare

Once you have chosen the CISSP, the next choice is how to prepare: ISC2's own training, a bootcamp, a video course, a question-bank app, books or self-study. Each is good at something different. CISSP prep options compared sets them side by side, with what each is good at and what to watch for.

How we write comparisons

  • Facts from the source. Exam facts come from ISC2's published outline and policies; other certifications' details come from their owners' pages.
  • Neutral about providers. We describe what other prep providers offer, checked on their own sites, without claims about their quality.
  • Dated. Each page shows when it was last reviewed. Details change, so confirm with the provider before you decide.

Questions people ask

Which is better, CISSP or CISM?

Neither is better in general. The CISSP is broader and covers technical domains as well as management; CISM focuses on security management and governance. Choose by the role you are aiming for.

Should I do Security+ before the CISSP?

Only if you are early in your career and want a foundational credential. The CISSP needs 5 years of relevant experience, so Security+ often comes first for newcomers.

Can I hold the CISSP and CISM together?

Yes. Many security leaders hold both, because they cover different ground and are issued by different organisations, ISC2 and ISACA.
